Great app, finally found a good Japanese dictionary with hand writing functions. one problem I have is, I can't seem to get が to be recognized in the hand writer. I can get か, however. Is there a specific way?
Aaahh. Unfortunately, I wrote the handwriting algorithm to recognise kanji. Very simple characters don't work well at all. Best to type it in if possible.
Sorry about that (and the late reply). Thanks!
Will you be adding reference numbers to The Kodansha Learner's Course by Andrew Scott Conning?
Hi there!
The data for Akebi is provided by EDRDG. It you would like Akebi to contain more data, you should get in contact with them. Unless they already have it, and I just haven't updated the dictionary in a long time.
Thanks for writing in!
I love how there are example sentences right underneath the word definition--I use it a lot. But one thing that bugs me is the phrases 事がある and 事がする。 I know I'm not an advanced learner of Japanese (I'd say intermediate) but I'm pretty sure these phrases are popping up where they shouldn't...If I look up 手伝う、I get something lile 手伝って欲しいで事がすが、instead of 欲しいですが。It happens in a load of other cases, too. I know well enough to ignore them, and I can always cross-check with jisho.org (which also uses the same WWWJ-something, I believe), but I think it would be nice, especially for beginners, if that could be fixed.
But seriously...this app you made--for FREE!--is SO USEFUL! I wonder if I've spent more time on any other app...Thank you so much! Grazie mille! Danke schön! Merci beaucoup! Muchas gracias! 本当にどうもありがとうございます!
Aaahhhh not ANOTHER problem with my stupid sentence splitter! I believe this problem is being caused by a glitch in the compression "algorithms" (if you can call it that) for the data files. Akebi must be interpreting something common as 事がある.
Sorry about that! Thanks for writing in, and thanks so much for the kind words! Sorry for the really late response. I've been a bit lazy lately....
I've just remembered another thing - the search function generally only works with all lower case inputs, which can be really really annoying sometimes, especially when my phone decides to capitalise a suggested word. For example when i type in 'England' I get no results, but when I type in 'england' I get a whole load of them. Thanks!!! (=^•^=)
Ugh yuck. Sorry about that! Hope to get around to fixing these issues soon.
Thanks again for writing in!
Hey Craxic!!! Akebi is one of the best Japanese dictionary app I've tried out so far; thanks a lot! :) Just a few suggestions for future versions: When viewing single example sentences it would be helpful to have the option of having furigana displayed for any kanji that may be there. The app being able to separate whole sentences into individual words would be very useful too. Having a section with conjugation tables for verbs/adjectives, would be a huge help. This could maybe also take words inputted and provide specific tables for those verbs too. Keep up the hard work!!! (=^•^=)
Thanks for the feedback. Conjugation tables should be coming in the future, and I hope to allow sentence splitting in the future too. All the example sentences are already pre-split though, just press the arrow to the right to open the splitting!
Cheers!
Great application! The kanji recognition is very good. List word customization is useful, I think. A switch for active lists in dictionary side, and single button access from top to kanji writing input would be nice for my use (bring kanji writing input to front when search button at top level is pressed). All 3 search methods together is great. I often use this for kanji writing input because it is so well designed, effective and responsive to poor caligraphy. Thanks!!
You're very welcome. I've been quite annoyed when I search things to find that it keeps popping up my keyboard when I want the handwriting screen. I'll have to fix it. Thanks a bunch!
Akebi is very good application for japanese translate. But it will be better if there was any voice records for word. Because im still confuse to speak it. Thanks
Hmm. There sure are a lot of people are requesting this feature. I'll have to look into it more. Thanks for the feedback!
I can tell that I am going to have fun with this app! It will help me to more quickly improve my Japanese skills. Thank you!
Oh no no no, thank YOU.
Akebi is a great tool...for looking up japanese words. You're supposed to be able to look up english words too, but whenever I try, Akebi tries to turn my words into hiragana in the search bar. Like I said, great app for looking up unknown Japanese words. Not very useful for english->japanese.
Thanks for writing to me! Akebi will actually search for English regardless of the Hiragana interpretation of the word. Please just ignore that bar when typing in English! Thanks!
I found it great! Also, amazing interface! xD
Thanks so much!
