Akebi Feedback #177

hi, great app. Can u add sounds?
(Received on 2014-12-27 13:20:58)

Hi there! Sounds are a bit of a low priority at the moment. I'm in the middle of upgrading the dictionary and adding more languages for users where English is their second langauge. After this is complete, there are many smaller bug fixes that need to be completed, so sounds will come a bit further down the track. Thanks for the feedback, and I'm sorry I can't get to it right away. But each time someone sends a feature request in, it makes me think about it more, and hopefully one day I'll address it.

Akebi Feedback #176

Hi, just downloaded your app. I typed a simple word like "hana" and the most basic definition (flower) appears after 15 other more complex words. I am sorry, but my first impression is not that good. Besides, the fact that all definitions come in this "brick wall" kind of layout make things more confusing. Listing the results from simpler to more complex kanjis, from one word to complex expressions and one definition per line would help. l congratulate you in your effort. I know that is a lot of work, but things look fancy but not very practical.

Thanks for the feedback and constructive criticism! The reason you see many words before the definition you are looking for is because they are "Auto-complete" words. I'm sure you can guess what these are, and why they need to be at the top. But I understand your frustration that "Hana" is not the top result. I'll have a think about what I might be able to do in order to make things more intuitive.

The brick wall layout is used to save space and show many results on the screen at once. Perhaps it would be better if a "grid" layout was used, but this would lead to issues with longer words. I can definitely make such a view an option though.

Thanks for writing in!

Akebi Feedback #175

This is a wonderful app! This is the only Japanese dictionary app I have that quizzes me on writing, and it's very appreciated in tandem with custom kanji groups. I do have a couple problems/suggestions, though:

  1. The options don't seem to take. They always default as soon as I leave the options screen.
  2. Having the keyboard automatically pop up every time I enter the main menu is a little annoying when I'm often there to open a custom group or list, not to search.
  3. Why are kanji I haven't gotten to yet and have never seen before being automatically marked at 50% and not 0%?

This app is a fantastic study aid. Thank you very much for making it! ありがとうございます!

Hey, thanks for sending me feedback and for the kind words!

  1. Uuurgh... Sorry about that. I believe that's the same problem that people are having with the lists. For some very frustrating reason, I can tell android to:
    1. Open a file
    2. Write some stuff to it
    3. Close the file

And you'd think that'd be enough to write a small options/lists file. But nope. Someone had this issue before, and I did some debugging with them over the internet: when I re-open the file I just saved: there's nothing in it! Empty! Aargh! And were no errors either! Very frustrating. I'm sorry the options don't stick for you. Hopefully I can try and address it partially in the next version which I hope to release some time early 2015. But there's still some way to go yet before its ready (I've been very busy).

  2. A lot of people find that very useful, including me. But it should be an option. I'll try to make some changes and fix that up in the elusive next version.
  3. Well, I decided since you've never seen the kanji in the app before, you might have seen it IRL before, so I just chose 50%. Seems silly to me now to be honest. Thanks!

I'm glad you like the app and I hope the problems aren't so bad it prevents you from using it. Thanks and my apologies!

You have not included usage notes with the syntax [note='...'] which are found in the edict/jmdict database. See usage note for 会う [note='逢う is often used for close friends, etc. and may be associated with drama or pathos; 遭う may have an undesirable nuance']. Including these notes which exist for many entries would be extremely helpful. Please include these and I'll give your app 5 stars.

Hi! Sorry for being so incompetent. I've found what you mean now, and they should be available in the next version. I couldn't find any such note= syntax, but thanks to your example I found what you meant anyway! The reason it isn't currently in there is because I'm using a very old version of edict. Thanks again!

Akebi Feedback #173

Usage notes which are included for words in the jmdict database should be shown. This would make your app more useful. Otherwise, good app so far.
(Received on 2014-12-20 08:31:04)

Hey there! I've had a look and I can't find any such "usage notes". Perhaps you are talking about the tags ("Irregular Kana Usage" "High Usage" etc.)? These are, of course, already included.

This is an amazing app but is anyone reporting that it seems to destroy battery charge?
(Received on 2014-12-18 21:15:16)

Hey! Thanks for the feedback! Actually, I've not had a single complaint about battery usage! I don't think that Akebi should use a lot of battery: it doesn't do anything in the background, so it only does stuff when you're using it.

Anyway, thanks!

Akebi Feedback #171

First, best JP dictionary I've found yet. I converted from WWWJDICT, itself an awesome app that just doesn't always do what I need. However, the one feature it had that I'm really missing in Akebi is the ability to export items into AnkiDroid. I know Akebi's own flashcard function is pretty fricken' sweet, but I gather vocabulary lists from more places than just my dictionary app and they all end up in Anki. It's just easier to keep my Akebi lists there, too (especially considering, let's be honest, that Anki is far more powerful a flashcard app). I did try using the export function but didn't have any luck. I know that it could be my own ignorance of how to make it work, too, and if that's the case a mildly reproachful explanation may be all I need.

Thank you for your hard work thus far and please keep it up! I'm currently living in Japan and finding my illiteracy particularly annoying when compared to my verbal fluency (which also isn't great, but is at least useful). Akebi makes life far easier for me as a バカ読めらず外人.

(Received on 2014-12-15 10:27:41)

Hi there!

You're right: AnkiDroid is a much better flashcard app than mine. Exporting to AnkiDroid has been requested before, but I've looked into it, and they use their own proprietary format. Luckily, their project is entirely open-source, so I should be able to figure out a way to write to AnkiDroid formatted files.

But this will take some time, and at the moment, the most important thing for me to do is re-write the dictionary files. I'm working on that at the moment, and hopefully I should have something out early 2015.

Using the export feature should be relatively simple. I'm guessing the trouble you're having is with importing it into AnkiDroid. I tried to make the export function pretty straight forward. Take a look at the file on a computer before you import it into AnkiDroid and just make sure it's what you expect. If you're still having trouble, let me know.

Hope that helps!

Akebi Feedback #170

Hey! This program is the best J dict on Android really! I have tried nearly all alternatives but nothings beats this.

But please make the drawing line thicker! (in stroke order panel as well)

(Received on 2014-12-15 09:28:58)

Thanks for the input! Other people have requested this, and I hope to fix it in the next update (which I hope to complete by early 2015)

suddenly crashed and my hundreds of list are gone any chance to get it back?
(Received on 2014-12-04 20:55:06)

OH NO I'M SO SORRY! :( :( Everytime this happens to someone I feel TERRIBLE. I'm really sorry about the late reply. Please make use of the backup feature until I get a chance to update Akebi. Still working on a dictionary upgrade, and it's finally holidays for me so I can get some serious work done.
