Akebi Feedback #97

so this is just one awesome tool and practically indispensable for me. I had a 1 year hiatus from Android and after I came back Akebi was my best pal in Japanese Lexicon. I presume you too know Japanese.(?) I too am an IT engineering student so I can verily appreciate the effort and the quality of code, the accompanied robustness etc in the app. If you think I could be of some help just get back to me! I have just one piece of feedback, which relates more to use of Akebi as a personal study tool than a plain old dictionary. As we have lists at the centre of the self-learning experience, it's rather awkward dealing with multiple lists and then putting words exempli gratia, I have a word that I want to put in say a list of Buddhist related words, but my active list is a generic list. In order to do that, and to the best of my knowledge of the working of Akebi (correct me, ruthlessly so, if I am wrong) I have no option but to note the words I have to put in Buddhism list, get out of the word search UI go to Lists and use the Romaji input to put it in the Buddh list. or I'll have to change the active list to the Budd list go back to the word search and search for all those words (those I erstwhile noted down) and then add them. Justifications:- Language enthusiasts (precisely the people learning Japanese, apart from those who do so Out of compulsion) will tend to you know, stumble upon words and may need to add them in sharply distinct categories. So :- I request you to add a feature whereby we can just add words to whatever list we want right from inside the word search interface. I believe that programmatically it shouldn't be hard Yet I appreciate any effort you put into Akebi. It makes massive contributions worldwide. I believe you should ask the Japanese Government for some emoluments. Afterall all those learning Japanese do so easily out of your efforts and that helps in no less terms getting Japan students in their Universities who pay lakhs of Yens and then contribute many more crores in terms of taxes, productivity etc to Japanese economy or may simply be Otakus contributing in terms of Anime/Manga sales; or maybe just furthering Japanese soft power *banzai* -dX_S

Wow! Thanks for writing! I'm glad you find it so useful! As for adding words to lists, there is a "send" icon at the top of the word view. If you press it, it gives you the option to add the word to any list, not just the current one. Still, if you couldn't find it, it's probably a mistake on my part. As for help with the app, I've been thinking about open-sourcing the app for quite some time now, however, I don't want to open source it just to have all my hard work lifted and placed in other japanese dictionaries on the play store. I will need to investigate open source licences before I can do this, as I believe the standard GPL won't protect me from this type of activity. As for asking the Japanese government for compensation: I think that would be a little disrespectful don't you! But I'm glad you think it's worth that! If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to contact me!

First, thank you for creating this app. Its a lot of fun and is probably one of the best dictionaries out there, not to mention its free! In terms of features, the JLPT N5 is missing, shouldn't be a problem to most people but you know :/ and it would be better if there was a way to order them to make them easier to learn. Thanks again!

idk if that's right I learnt it of anime

Haha! Thanks, some other people have been having difficulty with the way the kanji's are ordered. I'll make sure to take another look.

Akebi Feedback #95

Hi,

I love your app, I think it could become the best Japanese dictionary on Android but still have some feature to improve or to add.

First of all I think you should add the option to go directly to the search feature. Yeah, I know when you start it focus on the search box but for some of us it can be useful to start in the search feature as it's the most used and then be able to choose radicals or perform an advanced search without having to tap twice. I'm sure this can be usefull and pretty easy to do and you can let the user choose so I don't think nobody could complain about this.

Apart from that, I'm an Anki user and even if I appreciate your flashcards features I prefer to use Anki, so I would like you to add the option to export the lists to Anki in an easy way.

"Show words with this kanji" is not working for me, I don't know if I'm doing something wrong but it doesn't work at all.

Sometimes I don't know what is the right reading of one kanji when reading furigana. I mean, when there are 2 kanji together and you don't know where starts one reading and where ends the other one. Maybe you could add an option to separate them with "|" or something like that (I don't know if this is possibly in a technical way).

I find your interface pretty beautiful but sometimes it's like too big for me and I would like it to make the most of the screen face so maybe you could add a feature to reduce size letter, specially in example sentences or something like that. I don't know exactly how but I just feel sometimes the interface could use better the screen space.

Last but not least, I know this can be hard to implement but maybe you could add an OCR feature to be able to OCR Kanji or sentences and find the meaning in your dictionary. You could use the popular Tesseract so most of the work should be done. Anyway you can look into this to see an example of how to use it in Android: https://github.com/rmtheis/android-ocr/tree/master/android

I hope you find these features useful.

Keep up the good work!

1) Automatically going into the searching mode is easy to do! I'm sure I can make it an option! 2) Anki exporting has been a feature that other people have requested before. As I recall, it seems to use a proprietary format, which is going to make things tough. I'll take another look. 3) Not sure why that isn't working. If you could send me an email about it, that would be great! 4) I've been thinking about doing this... It's actually quite difficult! I'll try to take another look into it 5) Since I last did any serious development on Akebi, I now have access to another android device. On this device, the text seems to be far too large for some reason, so I should be able to fix that when I next work on Akebi. 6) OCR is definitly something I've wanted to add from the start. It would be very useful for me too! I could just take a photo of the Vocab lists in my textbook that I have to learn! Again, I'd love to add this feature, but I can only do it when I get some time. Thanks so so much for your long feedback. Even if I already planned to do some of the things you sent me, the fact that you spent so long writing me a message motivates me significantly! So thanks very much!

- let akebi jouyou grade/JLPT categories be clickable at-a-glance to save people the loading time of waiting for all the kanji for the selected section to load at once - have perhaps a small dot or icon appear when you click on a kanji or vocab word, to indicate it's already in a list, or maybe even customizeable icons/colors to indicate specific lists -have an option to further shuffle/randomize the default jouyou/JLPT lists, so the order they appear doesn't become a factor in memorization, as well - thank you for this app, it's been an incredible help for me. I'm entering my second year of japanese this fall and wanted a way to efficiently independently study kanji and this is perfect! if there is a way to support and donate towards your development of this app, please let me know!

All these sound like great suggestions. I'll add them to the list. If you're interested in supporting me, please make a donation to either EDRDG (the source of the data for Akebi), Wikipedia or Blender. Thanks!

I am trying to expand my Japanese through word where can I find that or is it not here and if not can you please make such a feature

I'm afraid I don't know what you mean...

This app is very useful. My vocabulary has significantly improved since I have downloaded this app. Also, I can study anytime I like, which is amazing!
However, there is one suggestion that I would like to make. If possible, please change the groupings. Like, it'd be a lot more convenient if you made groups like 'N5 to N1', as opposed to 'Grade 4 to Grade 1'
Plus, if you consider introducing any feature of grammar, that'd be awesome! :)

You're talking about the kanji groups right? I'll give it a look!

Akebi Feedback #91

Sometimes I'm walking around and I see a sign with 3 or 4 Kanji that i would like to translate. so I open Akebi and start drawing them. all perfect, they show up at the top. Akebi cannot figure, them out in a combo so I'd like to copy them and throw them in google or another app, thing is, I cant copy them, android wont give me the option to copy anything in the search bar. Anyway to add a copy button next to the search bar so it copies all characters in the bar?

(Received on 2014-05-23 00:54:21)

Actually, in a previous version, Akebi would split large words like that up into smaller ones. I'll get right to adding that back in as soon as I can. Thanks!

Akebi Feedback #90

Requests:

Ability to do flashcard quizzes on whole groups of lists.

Some kind of "are you sure you want to delete" check when user clicks on an X next to a list.

Ability to collapse/expand sections in a kanji list. The jlpt lists are too long and it takes ages to scroll down to jlpt 2 or 1
____

This app is so cool by the way. I use it as my primary study tool now. For me the core features are the ability to create lists of vocab and kanji and then the different testing methods built in to the lists.

I think it would be good if we could share lists with each other but not essential, as part of the study process ought to be the research and categorization of vocab by the user.

  1. Ability to do flashcards on a group of lists is a cool idea, I'll add it to the list of stuff!
  2. It does do that! It won't show up if there are no words in the list though!
  3. That's been requested before, and it's a good idea. I'll try to get onto it as soon as I can Thanks so much for the kind words. As for sharing, use the Export feature for the list. In an old version of Akebi, there was an ability to upload the lists to my website, but that didn't get used by anybody. Perhaps I can revisit the idea...

Backup and load do not seem to work. Pressing the buttons doesn't appear to do anything.
(Received on 2014-05-14 23:27:14)
That's curious... If the files aren't showing up under AkebiBackup on the root of the SD card, I'm not sure what could be going wrong. I'll have to put in some more error checking. Thanks!

For some reason when I enter Australia it cannot autocomplete or find the word in Japanese. I had to enter it in katakana to find it. Maybe a problem with search algorithm or something? Also, nice work with tutorial, made my day with those red arrows and 15 second pause. Very GlaDOS-like!
(Received on 2014-05-11 05:57:41)
Tehehe thanks! As for not being able to find Australia, that is very odd. Thanks for finding that! I'm currently working on upgrading the dictionary. When I do that, this problem should resolve itself.
